Dear St. Andrew’s Family,
After prayerful consideration, a thoughtful planning process, and a profound interest in the future of St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, I am announcing that I will be stepping down as Head of School on June 30, 2012. I shall have been in this position for 32 years. My hope for a clear and graceful transfer of leadership means, however, that I shall remain as part of the community and the school.
The Board of Trustees has asked me to play a transitional role at the school after June 30, 2012. Though I shall no longer be part of the day-to-day operations, I shall continue my involvement at St. Andrew’s as Special Counsel to the Board. This will entail sustaining our Episcopal identity, aiding advancement efforts to increase our endowment, spearheading the celebration of St. Andrew’s 60th anniversary in 2012-13, and working on other major projects that are part of our school life.
These many years as Head of St. Andrew’s have been extraordinarily rich and fulfilling for me. Almost four decades ago I told my husband Phil that what I really wanted to do was head an Episcopal school. I have been truly blessed to be able to do exactly what I dreamed of doing. During my tenure, I have had the opportunity to build relationships with so many wonderful people and see generations of students grow into admirable adults.
God has blessed our work together during these 32 years. I am enormously proud of this school and what we have built together. It has been my life’s work and, together with my family, my life’s joy. The school’s continued success is my utmost desire. I am delighted to continue working to sustain the qualities of St. Andrew’s that make us so special.
Several important projects to which I have devoted much of my time and energy for the last three years will culminate over the course of this year. We shall dedicate the Upper School’s Dell Fine Arts Center in April and the new 31st Street chapel and field renovation in May. Our self-study work of the past two years has been in preparation for an accreditation visit in February that will give the school guidelines for work over the next ten years. Finishing these projects seemed to indicate an appropriate time for this transition.
Though I shall still be a fan at games, a spectator at performances, and a leader at services, Phil and I love the idea of travel together and spending more time with our much loved children and grandchildren.
I can never thank everybody enough for all the support I have received during these years. I can never adequately express the joy these years have been for me.
Faithfully,
Lucy
