Student Council President Calls Middle School Meeting to Order in a Unique Way

Student Council president Read Barbee called the Middle School to order last week, blowing on a conch reminiscent of the novel Lord of the Flies. He drew applause from his fellow students and startled amusement from the Dean of Students, Kama Bruce. Eighth graders currently are reading William Golding's classic in English. In the allegory, a group of boys stranded on an island gather for a meeting after 12-year-old Ralph blows into a conch washed up upon the shore. After Barbee demonstrated  his grandmother's conch in class, the idea of surprising administrators with it at morning meeting quickly came up. Producing a sustained loud sound took some practice, Barbee reported. Judging from his peers' response, his effort seemed worth it.

New Members Inducted into National Junior Honor Society

Some very bright 7th and 8th grade students were surprised during a quiet lunch outside when they were told to report to different teachers and administrators for various school infractions. These shocked students were then taken by 8th graders to a classroom to receive their "punishment." Once in the classroom, they were met with cheers and some face paint as they were told they had qualified for the National Junior Honor Society. On Sunday, April 10, the new members were officially inducted in a lovely ceremony on the 31st Street campus chapel.

Middle School Students Battle in Math Wars

Middle School students had a great time at Math Wars last Saturday!

Over seventy Saint Andrew's middle school students, parents, and friends were in attendance at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar last Saturday as the Middle School Math Wars Club put on a live-action game show. During the event, the fifteen middle schoolers competing traded challenge questions and improv-challenges (called "Math-Libs"), and they also premiered math-puns videos and animated cartoons they created.

During the competition the audience enjoyed delicious food from the Alamo Drafthouse kitchen. The competitors and audience also listened to great music from a live DJ... more
