Welcome to the Beyond The Classroom (BTC) Home Page.

 

BTC is an extended-day program offering care for students from school dismissal until 5:30.

 

BTC OFFERS:

Basic Care - full afternoon supervision including snack, study hall, free play

Enrichment Activities - full afternoon supervision, including snack, study hall, and selected activity

Jumpstart - a homework session supervised by classroom teachers

Carpool pick-up - supervision of students waiting on a sibling who is dismissed at a later time

GYMNASTICS (Wednesday 3:45-4:30)

Students learn proper warm-up and condition with strength and flexibility exercises.  With the use of imagery and props, our developmental approach teaches tumbling, acrobatics, balance beam, and rhythmic gymnastics skills (ball, ribbon, and hoop manipulation). Minimum 10 students, maximum 15.

GOLF IN SCHOOLS (Friday 3:45-4:45)

- class will be 8 week session

- The Golf for Life class features our new three-level curriculum that allows students to graduate to new activities and skills as they advance through each level.  This comprehensive class provides students with the knowledge, fundamentals, and understanding that will allow them to enjoy the game of golf for a lifetime.  Our motto is "Golf is fun and easy to learn," an approach that is followed in a safe environment for students. This class also incorporates the many life skills found rooted in the game of golf, and necessary in the development of all young children. KIDS ACTING - (Tuesday 3:45-4:45)
In this exciting class you are introduced to performing for stage and screen.  Learn acting for TV, commercials, movies, and theatre including comedy, improvisation and musicals!  Great class for beginning actors and actresses!  You get to do it ALL!   Minimum of 10 students, Maximum of 16

 

 

ART WITH HOLLYANA MELEAR (Thursday 3:45-4:45)
Will cover a variety of projects such as sculpture in clay and printmaking with the students.  Maximum of 20 students

 

 

CHESS (Wednesday 4:00-5:00)
Gary Gaiffe, is a rated chess expert and USCF Certified Chess coach. His class will be open to players of all grades and ability levels. Gary is an Associate National Tournament Director and has been involved for many years on the national, state and local level. He ran many of the tournaments our chess players attended. We are truly fortunate to have him on our enrichment staff!

Having Gary on board affords St. Andrew’s students the opportunity to learn the game, play for recreation, and/or prepare for tournament competition. Gary is very experienced, having taught classes all over Austin as well as privately for many years. Gary’s classes, though structured, are fun, challenging and will inspire even the most tentative player! Play for recreation, and/or prepare for tournament competition.

BTC’s Chess has been very successful due to excellent coaching, outstanding participation by students, and super support by our parents when attending and holding tournaments. Please join the fun!  Requires a minimum of 6 students.

  

PERCUSSION (Monday 3:45-4:15)
Mr. Mayers will introduce students to hand drum techniques, time signatures, tempo and dynamics.  The class will also incorporate xylophones, tambourines, maracas, gongs and cymbals.  As well as learning popular rhythms, the students will also work together on compositions using stories and narration.

Mr. Mayers will listen to each student  the first day of class and will determine a time slot for your child.  Mr. Mayers teaches percussion to 6th and 7th grade students at St. Andrews, and also teaches guitar in BTC.  Outside of the school, he is the music director of the group Mundi.  their music has been featured on National Public Radio, and they have toured Spain twice.  Last year a composition by Mr. Mayers was featured in a concert by the University of Arizona Electronic Percussion Ensemble.  Requires a minimum of 6 students.

JUMPSTART (Tuesday—Thursday, grades 3-6)

Does your student need individualized help on questions about homework, time management skills, homework help and strategies? Requires a minimum of 6 students for each session.

KARATE

Monday - 1st graders: 3:35-4:20, 2nd graders: 4:25-5:10

Wednesday - Grades 3-4, 3:45-4:35


TAE KWON DO is offered through Third Coast Martial Arts (www.thirdcoastmartialarts.com). Third Coast Martial Arts is a family oriented school specializing in the world’s most popular self-defense art, Tae Kwon Do. This is an ancient form of martial arts originally from Korea. Translated, Tae means “foot”, Kwon means “fist”, and Do means “the way or the art”, so Tae Kwon Do is “the way of the foot and fist and is the synthesis of many Korean Martial Arts.

The philosophy of Taekwondo as an enrichment activity places emphasis not only on the technique of the sport, but the building of respect, self-confidence with self-control of body and mind. It gives the person a method of self-defense, but teachers that physical contact is the last resort. Requires a minimum of 6 students.

  • All students will be placed by ability level from beginner to experienced.
  • Cost of class will include testing fee. Testing takes place the last week of each trimester.  Students will test for WHITE and GOLD at St. Andrews.  Current gold (testing for green) and above will test at Third Coast.
  • Students taking karate for the first time will be measured and an appropriate size selected for them. If your student has outgrown their uniform new uniforms can be purchased for $14 (top and pants) or $10.00 for pants only.  Be sure to put students name on all pieces of the uniform: jacket, pants, and belt. 
  • Before class begins each week, students are allowed to change into their uniform.
  • Please sign release form that will come home after first class session.

  • White to Orange Belt – 10 classes
  • Orange to Gold Belt – 10 classes

  • Blue to Red Belt – 45 classes with 25 leadership credits
  • Red to Brown Belt – 45 classes with 25 leadership credits
  • Brown Belt to Stripe – 45 classes with 25 leadership credits
  • Brown Belt Striped to Black – 45 classes with 25 leadership credits

PIANO KS - (Tuesday–Thursday 3:30-6:00; 30 minute lessons/one day a week)

Private piano lessons, taught by Kathy Schmidt, are available to any student, beginner or experienced.

Kathy has been teaching in after school program for more than twelve years. Her students learn in a relaxed atmosphere with lots of teacher attention to ensure that the time spent in music class is a positive experience.

We are pleased to offer this outstanding program at a comparable cost to a private piano lesson, with the added convenience of students not having to leave the school campus to participate.

  • Enrollment is for 30 minutes, one day a week only, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.
  • Space for piano lessons is very limited; students previously enrolled are given priority.
  • If your student is not at this time enrolled for piano lessons you may put your name on the waiting list by calling the BTC office and requesting that it be added.
  • Students name will remain on the list until you are called and at that time you can accept a place or decline.

STRINGS
(Tuesday and Friday; 30 Minute lessons/one day a week)

 

Private lessons will be offered in violin and viola by Nick Jeffery.

DROP-INS

Students may attend BTC on days for which they are not registered.  Please notify by e-mail both the student's homeroom teacher and BTC.  A drop-in fee ($10/hr for basic care, $20/day for Jumpstart) will be charged.

If a student will be absent from BTC please e-mail or call.

 

BAD WEATHER DAYS

Should weather not permit outdoor play, BTC and pick-up will be located at Lower School chapel

Sean Fitzsimons - BTC Director - Has worked at BTC since January 2009 and is a graduate of Texas State University.  He attended St. Andrew's from 1st to 12th grade.  He loves sports and is a huge Longhorn fan.

 

Carroll Bellingrath has a BA from Rhodes College.  Carroll’s daughter, Ginger is in the 6th grade at St. Andrews and her son, Jack is a 2nd grader.

 

Blake Bowen attends UT where he majors in Computer Science.  Blake loves to play sports, especially lacrosse.  Enjoys playing with children, and had three years of experience being a Camp Counselor at Camp Longhorn and one year of being a Staff counselor at Camp Longhorn.  Blake is a CPR and is First Aid Certified.  He is from Austin.


Aaron Lemke is a SAS alumnus who attends UT.  He enjoys camping and playing music.  Aaron is a champion knee boarder and Chinese checkers grandmaster.

Taylor Mezaraups is a St. Andrew’s alumna who is now attending the University of Texas.  She loves art and music and also likes to train dogs. In her spare time, she enjoys contemplating the meaning of life.
