Upper School Sports Banquet Highlights Fall Season

The fall season was highlighted by the field hockey and volleyball teams each winning key games to qualify for the SPC tournament. Additionally, the boys’ cross country team placed sixth and the girls’ finished in 4th place in a very competitive, albeit muddy, SPC meet. The girls’ finish is tied for the best in school history. Last but not least, our football team finished the season with a record of 8-1, easily the best in St. Andrew’s history.
Also, for the first time in SPC history, St. Andrew’s co-hosted the Fall SPC tournament with St. Stephen’s. We received rave reviews, and we are excited about hosting the tournament again in the near future!

Cross Country Coach Reed Clemons was also recognized, as this marked the 12th and final year of him coaching cross country at St. Andrew’s. His three children, Callie, Flo, and Skip, are all graduates of the Upper School. His wife Betsy coached our Middle School cross country teams for many years as well. He, along with Coach Tuhabonye and Coach Shelton, have transformed the cross country program. Under the guidance of Coach Clemons, the sport is now the biggest on campus, and the boys’ team won the SPC Championship five straight years from 2008 to 2012. Included in that run was an SPC-record championship score of 25 team points, which needless to say, is an amazing accomplishment.

The seniors in cheer, cross country, and football (and their parents) were also recognized at the banquet.

Sterling Wilson Award:
This award is named in honor of Sterling Wilson, father of Grant and Trent, graduates in the class of 2009. It is given to that athlete that best exemplifies the qualities of Sterling, who was passionate, fiery, and committed, both as an athlete and also as a fan and supporter of the program.

This season, two seniors were awarded: Katherine Baker and Cole Baker

Head Field Hockey Coach Molly Blackman said, “Katherine exudes resiliency. Her tenacity, work ethic and competitive drive inspire her teammates to do the same no matter where they are on the field. Players feed off her refusal to give up. Katherine makes everyone around her a better player, and that is the best type of teammate.” Additionally, she came back from two different ACL tears.

Cole was described by Head Football Coach Ty Detmer as “a well-rounded person on and off the field. Cole has a great passion for life and leads by example. He plays his sport with tremendous pride and passion!”

Special thanks to SAGE Dining for providing the wonderful food, and to Presh Ashe for helping organize the banquet.
