Religious Studies Class Explores Personal Connections to Faith

Grace Ortman (US Religious Studies Teacher)
SAS juniors and seniors in Grace Ortman's Religious Studies classes engaged in many deep conversations and interfaith adventures this year; the multimedia projects students created to document and reflect upon their experiences are online at sasinterfaith.wordpress.com.

Hearing about and seeing the spiritual practices of others is a way for students to deepen their own commitments and inquiries. Mrs. Ortman's students interviewed faculty, peers, and members of the wider Austin community for perspectives  on religious identity, the importance of ethics and ritual, sin and redemption, and suffering and liberation. Students also made  fieldwork visits to local synagogues, Hindu and Buddhist temples and meditation centers, churches, and mosques; for many, these were eye-opening learning opportunities.

On the website, you'll get to hear recordings of interviews with Muslim students at Austin Peace Academy, our own Lower and Middle School chaplain Ashley Brandon along with many other faculty, SAS grandparent Judy Myers, and more. We hope that you enjoy!
