2nd Grade Reads to Help Homeless

After reading over 1,000 books, our second graders proudly donated their reading earnings to the Front Steps charity that helps Austin’s homeless. Ms. Culliton’s second graders presented Natalie Freeburg from Front Steps with a check for $62, which they raised through sponsored reading.
Earlier in the year, student Hadley Shaffer suggested Front Steps as the charity to support with her group’s rice krispie business earnings. After learning more about Front Steps, students committed themselves to raise more funds through sponsored reading.

Student Megan Schultz read the most books and presented Ms. Freeburg the check. Ms. Freeburg explained that the money would purchase move-in kits for several people transitioning to new homes. The kits include many essential items for a new home: dishes, utensils, soap, and towels. She encouraged students to support organizations like hers by researching what kinds of donations they need and coordinating with parents on how to participate.
