William Martinez To Lead Golf Program

St. Andrew’s School proudly announces the hiring of William Martinez to the position of Head Varsity Golf Coach.

An Austin native, Martinez played his high school golf for Vandegrift High School where he helped lead the Vipers to a Texas State High School Championship title in 2014 while notching a silver medal of his own.
A life-long golfer, Martinez has hit the links as a member of the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA), with a career that included five top-25 finishes, highlighted by two top-three finishes. He was a member of the 2012 Jackie Burke Cup team, and this past summer he served as the Captain of the South team of that same competition.

“I'm honored to be coaching at St. Andrew's,” said Martinez. “I've been around competitive golf for over 10 years in various capacities, and am excited to step into my first coaching role. Looking forward to competing and getting better together this season.

Also new to the program are assistant coaches Bill Heim and Whitney Kirby.

Heim played collegiate golf at the University of Texas - El Paso, and played professionally for three years on numerous tours. After his playing career, Heim served as a professional caddie for 14 years, most notably in 2002 for Rich Beem when he won the PGA Championship. Other golfers Heim caddied for include Mike Weir and Joe Ogilvie.

Kirby is a familiar face to St. Andrew's already, serving as the Upper School Chaplain. She played high school golf at Alamo Heights in San Antonio. Although she had opportunities to play Division II collegiate golf, she turned them down to attend the University of Texas at Austin.

“I cannot say enough good things about the caliber of the coaching staff that we have formed. Coach Martinez has a sharp mind and will be an excellent fit as Head Coach. Coach Heim and Coach Kirby bring an incredible background to the program as well, and the three of them together will be a terrific blend. I am excited to see where they will take the golf program moving forward,” said Athletic Director Jeff McCrary.
