History Students Enjoy Chili and Texas Independence Day

3/9/2010

Seventh graders celebrated Texas Independence Day with spicy homemade chili, queso, guacamole, and a reading of William Barrett Travis’s famous letter from the Alamo. Audrey A. and the team of Isabelle C. and Annika M. shared in the honor of grand champion for the Fifth Annual Chili Cook-Off. Alex K.’s queso chili wrangled the “most unusual" title while Ford S. and John B. burned many a judge’s mouth with the “spiciest in show” title.

Twelve faculty judges sampled the thirteen chili-head entries before all of the seventh grade Texas history classes enjoyed the Tex-Mex feast. Other chili-head entrants included Elly S., Ana M., Chess P., Jordan N., Sam M., Jackson H., Perrie L., Madeleine M., Megan K., Sarah H., Asa B., and Ben L.

The event marked the 174th anniversary of Texas independence, which was declared on March 2, 1836, at Washington-on-the-Brazos, and the fall of the Alamo on March 6, 1836, in San Antonio. Students in Mr. Bruce’s class also viewed a video of Travis’s letter from the Alamo read by the late U.S. Senator John Tower.
