 | Academics Academics Welcome A major principle of the mission of St. Andrew’s Episcopal School has always been to create a learning environment in which all of our children can develop their full potential in terms of intellectual understanding, athletic prowess, and moral and spiritual character. It is our hope that the valuable lessons learned on our campuses will serve our students well beyond their years at St. Andrew’s.
We strive to teach values and develop character; to insure the mastery of essential skills; to provide for enrichment in all instructional areas; to develop an appreciation for the fine arts; to develop motor skills, physical fitness, and good sportsmanship; to instill a sense of responsibility, self-discipline, and self-respect; and to develop a concern for others through community service.
In 2007, the entire faculty of went through an exercise called ‘The Picture of the Graduate.’ We spent a day discussing the attributes, attitudes, skills, and knowledge we want our graduates to have when they leave St. Andrew’s. | Q. | If I've already taken the equivalent of Latin II or Spanish II or
math through Geometry in middle school, does that mean I only have to
take one year of a foreign language or math at the Upper School? | | A. | No. In math, students must take 3 math credits in grades 9-12 (the
credits must include courses at or above the level of Algebra I,
Geometry, and Algebra II). Therefore a student who took Algebra I and
Geometry in middle school would have to pursue Algebra II and two other
math courses while enrolled at St. Andrew's Upper School. In foreign
language, students must earn 3 foreign language credits in grades 9-12.
There are two ways to fulfill this requirement: 1) students may take 3
sequential years of the same language, beginning in grade 9, or 2) 2
sequential years of a second language after successful completion of
the third level of a first language. |
