IMPORTANT UPPER SCHOOL INFORMATION
January-February Newsletter
Dear Parents:
Happy New Year to all of you! I hope the holidays were a very pleasant and restful affair. Of course, we’re already up to our necks in program, so let me briefly bring you up to speed about events current and forthcoming for January and February.
Our winter sports teams are doing well. The Varsity Girls Soccer and Boys Basketball Teams are having a particularly fine run. Currently, they both have a good chance of getting into Division I competition at the SPC Championships in February. The Swimming Team is also off to a very good start and has similar expectations for the SPC competitions. I invite you to check out the individual team pages on the school website to see how each has fared thus far this season.
Of course, this is also a busy time in the College Counseling Office. Many seniors are waiting expectantly to hear from the colleges and universities to which they have applied, while others who applied early decision/action have already gotten word. Please check the SAS website under Upper School College Counseling for an updated list of acceptances for the Class of 2013. Finally, for juniors and their parents, Elizabeth Guice and her team of counselors will host a “College Night” program on Wednesday, Jan. 30 @ 6:30 PM to give an overview of the college application process with special emphasis on what needs to be done over the remainder of this school year and during the coming summer.
Of immediate interest, progress reports are being compiled over the next couple of days (1/22 & 1/23), and you’ll soon receive an email notice from Mike Kirkendall letting you know when they’ve been posted to your respective portals.
In February, let me point out a couple of things:
- Re-enrollment contracts will be mailed out on February 1; please try to sign and return them by Friday, Feb. 15.
- Second trimester exams at the Upper School will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 20 and run the rest of that week.
- Finally, the winter athletic awards ceremony will take in the Dell Fine Arts Center on Sunday, February 24 at 1:30.
Please check the school’s website where you will find a complete listing of the upcoming athletic contests, arts events, and other important school dates.
In closing, I’m sure you’re aware there are lots of bugs going around that have laid not just a few of us low. If your son or daughter falls ill, please help him or her to recover fully and quickly by making sure your student is rested and fever-free before returning to school. Relatedly, I’d like to remind everyone of the school’s tardy policy for first period. The Student Handbook states, “A student who is too sick or tired to report to school on time must stay home the entire day. Any student arriving after the end of first period may be sent home.” Thanks for your help on this front . . . I’ll be back in touch in March.
Sincerely,
Tim McGhee
Head of Upper School
