Anne M. Smalling is President and Managing Partner of HM International, LLC (HMI) a privately-held business representing the interests of the Meinig and Hojel families. Assuming the position of President in 1999, Anne provides the key leadership role for both operating entities and investment assets. Her primary responsibilities include providing oversight and supervision of the operating businesses including succession and strategic planning, obtaining financing, evaluating acquisition and divestitures and approving major capital expenditures. She also actively manages external investment managers and leads the family’s investment committee.
With broad domestic and international operating experience in both manufacturing and service businesses, she is focused on driving long-term shareholder value. Leading HM’s organizations to double-digit growth for multiple years thru acquisitions and organic growth, Ms. Smalling has developed transactional expertise in financing, acquisition and divestiture opportunities. During her tenure at HMI, Anne has overseen the acquisition of 20+ businesses and the sale of 5 with realizations of greater than $1B, the establishment of manufacturing facilities in the US, Mexico and China and numerous new product introductions.
Ms. Smalling currently serves as the Chair of the Boards of Directors of Quality Sausage Company and American Innovations. She also serves on the Boards of Cantalope.Inc, Igasamex, Lucerno, Garrison Brothers, Essentium Technologies and rateGenius, Inc. She is on the advisory boards of Tiff’s Treats, Access Venture Partners and 2X Partners. She formerly served as Chairman of Windsor Quality Food Company and on the Boards of Directors of Ninthhouse, PDI-Ninth House and Quick Arrow.
Anne has also been an active leader in the community and philanthropically. She is a member of the Cornell University Board of Trustees. As trustee of the Meinig Family Foundation, she participates in the evaluation and allocation process of the Foundation’s gifts. Anne is the former (and longest standing) Chair of the Board of the United Way of Central Texas. Anne served on the Board of St. Andrews Episcopal School from 2006 to 2016, chairing the Finance Committee from 2010 to 2016.
Prior to her positions with HMI Anne worked for FMC Corporation and SmithKline Beecham. Anne has a BS in Developmental Psychology from Cornell University and a MBA from Harvard Business School.
Anne and her husband Rich Smalling have lived in Austin, Texas since 1995. They have two daughters, Marina (Duke University 2019) and Samantha (Cornell University BS 2020/MEng 2021). Anne enjoys the outdoors, travel, golf, biking and water sports.
