St. Andrew’s Episcopal School is excited to announce that Alice Nezzer ‘81, current Head of the Middle School, has been appointed by Head of School Melissa Grubb as the next Assistant Head of School, effective July 1, 2022.
Alice will replace current Assistant Head of School Kama Bruce who has accepted a position at Catlin Gable, a PreK-12th grade independent school in Portland, Oregon. Kama has selflessly served St. Andrew’s in many capacities, including as a fifth grade teacher, Middle School Dean, Head of Lower School and Assistant of Head of School, since 2004. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy and St. Andrew’s thanks him, his wife Elva - a beloved St. Andrew’s kindergarten teacher - and children Isaiah and Nayeli for being a valued, integral part of the SAS school family and know that they will be blessings in their new school community in the Pacific Northwest.
Alice is in her 13th year of serving St. Andrew’s as Head of Middle School and her 15th year at St. Andrew’s, having previously served as a teacher in the Middle School and in other independent schools. She is an alumna of St. Andrew’s and St. Stephen’s Episcopal School with a Bachelor in Religious Studies from Sewanee and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Texas at Austin. She is wonderfully suited for the work that includes focus on K-12 alignment across each of the four pillars and bringing SAS closer together as a K-12 community. “I am excited for a new chapter in my St. Andrew's story, said Mrs. Nezzer. “Having been a student, a teacher, a Dean, and the Head of Middle School here, I am eager to dive more deeply into the K-12 experience and find ways to celebrate our St. Andrew's Community.”
She will focus not only on community-building efforts, but also on aspects of SAS that have opportunities for more consistency or efficiency. No one is better poised to be the nurturer of cherished traditions and celebrations with a simultaneous eye for opportunities for improvement and evolvement in keeping with the spirit and ethos of SAS.
“St. Andrew's has a rich history," said Mrs. Nezzer. “The school has not been afraid to face change as it has grown from a small elementary school to a large K-12 school. What has kept and will keep SAS strong is its sense of community: it has always been and should always be a school that cares about people.”
Tim Moore, current Middle School Dean of Students since 2014, has agreed to serve as Interim Head of Middle School for the 2022-23 school year as St. Andrew’s conducts a national search for the next permanent Head of Middle School. Mr. Moore is beautifully poised to provide leadership continuity in very capable, experienced ways as St. Andrew’s embarks on a search next fall.
