Forming strong relationships with children and parents is at the heart of great teaching, learning, and community building. In the fall of 2017, we initiated home visits with incoming kindergarten students. For teachers the visit provides a chance to learn about each child's interests and personality. Children share their toys, books, and play with teachers in their own space, which gives them a sense of independence and engagement from the start. During the visit, parents share their hopes and dreams for the school year with the teachers. Ultimately, establishing this relationship between teacher and child early helps every child feel a sense of connectedness and familiarity on the first day of school.
