Hofer’s Civics Project Makes Local News

Eighth-grader Ben Hofer has found himself in the local spotlight (Spectrum and KXAN) after launching a plan to tackle some of the $19,000 worth of Austin Independent School District's school lunch debt.  Ben said, “I didn't realize public school students had to pay every day a certain amount of money to get lunch.”
After consulting with an AISD representative to understand which schools had the most lunch debt, Ben launched his fundraising efforts for Akins High School, Paredes Middle School, and Blazier Elementary.

Ben is among many other St. Andrew’s eighth-graders who are tackling issues of local and national importance as part of their Project Citizen work, which will culminate in the Civics Fair on Tuesday, May 14 in St. Andrew's Dell Hall from 2:15 pm to 3:45 pm.

Middle School Dean of Students, Tim Moore, remarks, “It’s been a blast to watch Ben and so many of his peers engage in meaningful work. They are learning at a young age that they can have an impact on their community and issues that they care about. I hope everyone can come see all of the work Ben and his classmates have done at our Civics Fair on May 14.”
