Fall Sports Wrap Up

The 2019 Fall Highlanders sports season isn't over quite yet, but it's been one for the books already. At the Upper School, Saints football, in the second season of combining forces with St. Stephen's, is having their best season since joining the SPC. With a record of 4-5, they are still in the hunt to make the SPC 3A Championship game. Despite only returning two starters from the 2018 campaign, the field hockey team has had a great season, already qualifying for the SPC tournament. Girls varsity volleyball is having their best season in almost a decade, only one win shy of tying the school record of wins in a season, with a record of 22-8. They will go for their 23rd, and record tying, win at the Homecoming game on Friday, Nov. 1 against St. Stephen’s. They will also return to the SPC tournament this year. Boys varsity volleyball, only in year two of the program, will compete in the SPC tournament for the first time this year. The cross country team hosted the SPC South Zone meet last weekend and had a great showing, particularly from the underclassmen. They will send multiple runners to compete in the SPC meet at the end of the season. Rounding out the Upper School fall sports season is our cheer squad, who have had such a great fall season, we will sponsor a winter team for the first time ever!

Fall sports at the middle school haven’t disappointed either! The 5/6 and 7/8 boys cross country teams both won the AIPL Championship, and both girls teams, 5/6 and 7/8, took 2nd place! Boys volleyball had a fantastic season, fielding two teams for the first time. The boys flag football program sponsored three teams this fall, all whom had great seasons, showing significant improvement along the way. Our boys football team played six-man football for the first time this year, showing impressive resilience with the change and have settled into the new configuration nicely. With incredible interest in our girls volleyball program, we were able to field eight different teams, all finishing with winning records. Enthusiasm for the middle school field hockey program also continues to grow, fielding two full teams this year. They traveled as far as San Antonio to compete, showing vast improvement throughout the season. Continuing the trend from the Upper School, the Middle School cheer squad, gaining more members each year, had a great season.
It’s safe to say we’ve kicked off 2019-2020 SAS athletics on a high note, and are looking forward to carry that momentum into the winter sports season.
GO HIGHLANDERS!
