Celebrating Susan Kemner Reed: Artist, Teacher, Mentor

On February 21, 2020, alumni, parents, faculty, former faculty and friends gathered at the Dell Fine Arts Center for Celebrating with Susan Kemner Reed: Artist, Teacher, Mentor, an art show commemorating the retirement of founding faculty member Susan Kemner Reed.
The show included a series from one of Susan’s most personal collections, A Mother’s Anxiety, based on her son’s deployment following the September 11, 2001 attacks. Susan’s work was accompanied with pieces by her former students, with over 20 alumni submitting their artwork to be shown alongside hers. Other alumni sent in memories and testimonials of their time with Susan — noting what she taught them, and the impact she had on their lives. These submissions were hung around the gallery, alongside the artwork, for all to read.

Guests filled the DFAC lobby to give hugs and well wishes to Susan, and admire the art from students she has inspired. The crowd heard from some of Susan's SAS colleagues who read notes from Susan’s former students, as well as remarks from Art Department Chair, Dave Guidi and Studio Art Teacher, Chris McCoy. The Upper School Jazz Band played beautiful background music for the celebration. The exhibit will remain in the DFAC Lobby through the beginning of April, so make sure you stop by when you’re on campus!
