Ethan Hanna ’20 Bestowed Prestigious Bob Scott Award

Former Highlanders boys’ lacrosse player Ethan Hanna ’20 has been awarded the prestigious US Lacrosse Bob Scott Award.

A four-year varsity starter, all-conference player (Southwest Preparatory Conference and Texas High School Lacrosse League), and two-time team captain, Hanna did more off the field, both academically and perhaps more importantly in the community, than he did on.
While his impressive grade point average and SAT scores were involved in the decision making process, it was his human service and compassion that were highlighted above all else for consideration.

The Bob Scott Award recognizes high school seniors who go above and beyond in service to their team, school, and community. These athletes, who truly honor the game of lacrosse, are invested in the development of the game in their town and are exemplary teammates. In addition, they must be outstanding students with high academic achievement and serve as role models within their school community.

The SAS ‘lifer’ held a variety of school leadership positions during his four years on Southwest Parkway, notably being twice cast as the lead in the St. Andrew’s School Fall Musical. In addition, he was a member of the Select Choir where he garnered all-region and all-state singing honors.

During his junior year, while fully engrossed in the lacrosse season, Hanna made time to engage and fundraise with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s South Central Texas Austin Chapter in their Students of the Year Program. He, and his partner, raised $117,227 in seven weeks, with their original goal being $50,000 (nearly two and one half times the initial amount). All this was in honor of a local patient hero currently battling a blood cancer.

In the summer between sophomore and junior year, as part of his junior experience, he spent 14 days in Cordoba, Argentina volunteering at hospitals and clinics for upwards of six hours per day.

In keeping with his love of the sport of lacrosse he continually volunteered for three straight summers and winters at the St. Andrew’s School youth lacrosse camp. A camper favorite, his ability to connect with the game and spread his love of it was seen many times over.

His sophomore season and continuing today, Ethan has been an on-campus ambassador to our two teammates through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, which matches pediatric brain cancer patients with high school and collegiate teams.
Unfortunately and completely terribly, this past fall the team lost one of the brothers due to surgical complications, and not only did Ethan keep the team's spirits high, but also the family's.  The amount of joy that he brought to DJ Mojica during his time with us, is something we all continue to marvel at, and further illustrate what a special and caring young man.

This fall he will be headed to Centre College to both play NCAA ball and major in
Behavioral Neuroscience on the Pre-Med track. Ethan states that he is participating in both “So that I can continue to help others and make this world just a little bit better."

Recent US Lacrosse award recipients include Stewart Lerner ’18 (Academic All-American).
