Highlanders To Celebrate National Girls and Women In Sports Day

On Tuesday, February 2, the SAS Athletics Department will celebrate and honor our very own female athletes on National Girls And Women In Sports Day.

The National Girls and Women in Sports Day, is an annual day of observance held during the first week of February to acknowledge the accomplishments of female athletes, recognize the influence of sports participation for women and girls, and honor the progress and continuing struggle for equality for women in sports.

On February 3, 1987, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5606 declaring February 4, 1987, as National Women in Sports Day.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the event, and as part of the day, each female Highlander will be greeted by welcome banners on both campuses, receive a special charm keepsake, and hear addresses by a number of noteworthy and accomplished athletes in a video presentation.

"For girls who are participating now, it is such a great time to be a female athlete," former St. Andrew's soccer and lacrosse coach and current Director of Sports Management/NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative at Regis College, Elizabeth Conant, EdD shared. "It seems like we're finally making progress in terms of being seen as legitimate and valuable, and as important as the sports that young men play, and I want you to always take pride in the fact that your hard work and your involvement are just as important as what the guys are doing."

Female coaches, athletic administrators, fitness gurus, Olympic champions, NCAA All-Americans,  financial world executives, college professors, medical doctors, registered nurses, etc., all of whom participated in competitive athletics, will share their thoughts and advice to our Highlanders.

The following are the names and achievements of the athletes who will answer the following questions in their address to our Highlanders:

1) What has athletics meant to you and/or what have you learned through sports?

2) What would you say to empower female high school athletes?

3) Any advice you would give to those ladies watching this right now?
