Felix Gonzalez Named New Swimming Program Director

(Austin, TX) – St. Andrew’s Episcopal School Head of Upper School Ben Courchesne and Director of Athletics Jeff McCrary jointly announce the hiring of Felix Gonzalez as the next 6th through 12th grade Swimming Program Director.

"I am so happy that Felix is joining our coaching staff," McCrary shared. "His extensive experience, both as an athlete and more importantly as a coach, will be a huge boost to our swimming program.  Felix's positive attitude and infectious personality will motivate our athletes to do great things.  We have a great nucleus of swimmers in our program, and with Felix's leadership, I am confident that we will only continue that upward trajectory."

Gonzalez was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and he had a strong impact in his home country.  He was a part of the Puerto Rico Junior National Team for five years, and he was a key member of the University of Puerto Rico swimming team for four years as well.

"We're happy to welcome Coach Gonzalez to the St. Andrew's coaching family," Courchesne remarked.  "His expertise as a swimming coach combined with his demeanor and affect with our athletes sets him apart and makes him an excellent fit for our program."

Gonzalez began his coaching career in 2009, and he quickly received the opportunity to be the Assistant Coach of the University of Puerto Rico swimming team for two seasons.

In 2014, Gonzalez moved to Austin and began coaching.  He worked for Nitro Swimming for six years, serving as the Lead Coach for the 11 to 14 year old age group.  With Nitro, his teams participated in 12 State championships, winning seven of them.

Gonzalez was the Head Coach for St. Michael's from 2015 to 2016.  Despite a small roster, the team took third place in District and fifth place in the State.

Most recently, Gonzalez has joined the coaching staff at the Austin Swim Club, where the St. Andrew's Swimming Team practices.

“I am super thrilled for this new opportunity in my coaching career," Gonzalez commented. "Either years ago on my first visit to Austin, we drove by the campus and thought, 'Wow, what a great campus for high school!'  Now, I have the privilege of being part of the St. Andrew's community. I am looking forward to a successful season in the pool and in the classroom.”

Coach Gonzalez and his wife are proud parents of two boys, Felix Jr. and Lucas.  He is also a certified personal trainer and sports nutritionist.

A welcome meeting for Coach Gonzalez will be held for all swimmers on Tuesday, Sep. 14th at 8:15 a.m. in the gymnasium.
