In Memoriam: Johnson Craft Dunham '12

Johnson Craft Dunham died unexpectedly on June 8, 2015. He was born on December 30, 1993 in Austin, Texas. He was 21 years old.

A kind, sensitive young man, Johnson was also an outstanding scholar and a gifted athlete. He attended Trinity Episcopal School and St. Andrew's Episcopal School before venturing west to UCLA, where he quickly achieved acceptance into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars for academic excellence.

Johnson was an avid sports participant and supporter. He readily rose to a competitive level in any sport he tried. He played seven years of AAU basketball and for three years he was awarded all-conference honors for basketball in the Southwestern Prepatory Conference. Recently, he took up golf and tennis, and in both sports, he was recognized for his gifted ability. You could often find Johnson and his father, Dave, on a court or course engaged in serious play or in the stands watching a game. He ran to Mount Bonnell most mornings with his mother, Amy.

Johnson enjoyed working and in his summers held many interesting jobs, including working in Austin for Concept Services, the Mexican Consulate, Austin's Pizza and working for SoloShot in San Antonio.

Johnson loved all animals, especially his dog, Shadow. He enjoyed traveling. Visiting India was a life changing experience, and his favorite city was Barcelona, Spain. Most of all he treasured his summers in Maine with his family. He loved music, reading, and movies. Johnson looked up to his older brother, Win, and they adored playing all sorts of games together. He also enjoyed good food and meaningful conversation. He was a strategic thinker and he had a strong moral compass. More than that, he was a quiet, gentle giant who had great capacity to love.

He is survived by his parents, Amy and David Dunham, his brother Win Dunham, his paternal grandmother, Betty Dunham, and his maternal grandfather, Jerome Johnson. He will be greatly missed by his numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and special friends.

The family greatly appreciates the compassionate care provided by the Brackenridge Hospital medical teams.

A memorial service will be held at St. David's Episcopal Church on Wednesday, June 17 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Austin Humane Society or the charity of your choice.
