Family Fun at St. Andrew's Homecoming

You don’t have to be in high school at St. Andrew’s to join in the revelry of Homecoming, and it showed on Saturday, September 30 at St. Andrew’s Upper School campus. The Nazro field was buzzing with activities for students, parents, families, faculty and alumni of all ages. See the Homecoming 2017 photo gallery here. Watch sophomore George Moore's Homecoming video highlights here.

Wholly Kabob, Roppolo’s Pizza, Slab BBQ, The Hot Dog King of Austin, Quality Seafood, and Teo’s Gelato food trucks were onsite to feed the crowd, while some families opted to bring their own picnic lunch and enjoy the shade of the campus oak trees. Bales of hay and a giant “SAS” balloon made by Ballooms of Austin was a favorite photo spot for everyone on campus. A water bottle refill station was particularly handy for the kids working up a sweat playing spikeball, tag, and touch football.

Middle School cheerleaders volunteered to help paint faces of eager Homecoming fans, and parents volunteered to run the Spirit Shop table for some game-day purchases to keep everyone looking their most spirited.

Alumni were in the thick of things with their tent on Nazro field. The Class of 2010 had a strong showing of alums--including Christina Canzoneri, Peter Carruth, Craig Katkic, and Kyle Quick-- who visited with favorite faculty members while enjoying a catered Santa Rita lunch.

Kindergartners and seniors held hands to form the Spirit Tunnel and cheered for the varsity football team as they charged onto the field to face John Cooper School. Brothers DJ and Jaxen Mojica performed the coin toss. The Mojica’s are an honorary St. Andrew’s family matched through the Friends of Jaclyn organization, which supports families fighting pediatric cancers.

Ashlei Mojica remarks, “It's an incredible feeling having just joined St. Andrew’s a few months ago but feeling just like family when we are on campus. It was a great honor for DJ and Jaxen to be honorary team captains for St. Andrew’s Homecoming. The boys had a blast with front row seats and sideline service. The atmosphere on the field was so welcoming and made us feel right at home. The game gave us plenty to talk about, especially Coach DJ who was scheming up new plays on the way home."

At halftime, the Homecoming Court nominees from the Upper School took the field, with every student receiving an enthusiastic cheer from the crowd. The St. Andrew’s Homecoming Court students are Christian Brown ‘21, Olivia Shumaker ‘21, Chelan Beavers ‘20, Pearce Strickland ‘20, Alex Swearingen ‘19, and Emma Tuhabonye ‘19.
