AP Chemistry Investigates Science Behind YETI

Bryan Dunn, AP Chemistry Teacher
Our recent unit in AP Chemistry focused on the study of thermochemistry and thermodynamics, a timely topic as we think about heat in the cold weather. The class partnered with Austin-based company, YETI, for a lab on calorimetry. Students had an opportunity to evaluate a donated YETI tumbler as a calorimeter, a device that measures heat released or absorbed by a chemical reaction. Typically a nested styrofoam cup is used, but we were able to critically think and understand deeper into YETI's claim of keeping your drink colder (or warmer) longer than its competitors and if it can also work as a calorimeter!
