SAS Adds Boys Varsity Volleyball This Fall

Director of Athletics Jeff McCrary announced that beginning this fall, St. Andrew's will add the sport of Boys Varsity Volleyball.

The team will compete in the Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) and have begun immediately planning.
"This opportunity has a number of benefits for our student-athletes and we’re excited to start the fall season with a new athletic offering," McCrary explained.

There are several reasons why we want to develop this program:

1) Creating a Boys Volleyball Program balances out the number of fall varsity sports that are offered. Currently, we have one more female sport (field hockey and volleyball) than male sport (football) in the fall. Cross country and cheer are available to all of our students. This gives our boys another opportunity to be physically active and participate, and in turn, equalizes our athletic offerings.

2) We have some strong talent on our campus currently and also quite a few male athletes who do not participate in the current sports options. As I’ve observed our programming over the years, I believe much of this stems from St. Andrew’s not offering more available and appealing options. Our hope is that the addition of Boys Volleyball will inspire more students to get involved in the program.

3) Many of our local competitors do not field boys' volleyball teams. As a result, this creates a niche market, especially given the high level of Texas volleyball players competing at the NCAA level. However, St. Stephen's added Boys Volleyball in 2016 and in just their second year of competition, they finished in second place in the SPC South Zone standings. We believe there is great opportunity for success with this at St. Andrew’s as well!

These are just a few of many reasons we believe offering Boys Volleyball will benefit our overall program. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Boys Volleyball is the second-fastest growing sport in the country, further fueling our desire to create our own program.
