Baker '16 is Ford Motor Company's "Player of the Week"

Cole Baker '16 was one of six outstanding student athletes selected by Ford Motor Company during their eighth week of the “Built Ford Tough” Texas High School Football Player of the Week program. The program recognizes one player in each of the state’s six athletic classifications. The winners are chosen for athletic achievements, outstanding scholarship, and community involvement.

Their description of Cole follows:
There’s one constant at St. Andrew’s: If the ball is in play, Cole Baker is on the field. On offense, defense and special teams, the 5-foot-7-inch, 170-pound powerhouse is always in the middle of everything. In a match-up with one-loss San Antonio St. Mary’s Hall, Baker got the Crusaders going, carrying the ball 33 times for 273 yards and three touchdowns. That’s a full night for some players, but not for Baker. He also made five solo tackles and had a sack from his spot at middle linebacker. By the final whistle, St. Andrew’s had blown away the Barons 49-0, elevating the Crusaders’ record to 7-0 overall and 2-0 among SPC Independents. “If we want to get Cole off the field,” said Coach Ty Detmer, “we practically have to drag him off.”

He’s St. Andrew’s leading rusher and leading tackler with 49 solo tackles, five tackles for loss, three sacks and one forced fumble. Baker is an achiever on and off the field. A 4.0 GPA student who also plays baseball, he’s the co-founder of the Cattleman’s program, which feeds the hungry, is active volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club, and participates in the Loaves & Fishes food pantry. Although his size will limit his college football choices, he intends to play on Saturdays, probably at a Division III school. He has already visited MIT.

“This kid is very tough,” said Coach Detmer, “and he has a tremendous work ethic. He runs the defense and makes all the checks. His teammates, who have voted him captain for the last three years, really respect him. Baker goes full speed at every practice and has that certain attitude that you look for in a leader. He’s not the biggest guy, but he has the biggest heart.” Read the story online here
