SAS Celebrates MLK Legacy

This year St. Andrew’s students and faculty honored the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., in chapel, art, and the greater Austin community. Lower and Middle School students joined together for a special MLK chapel assembly in which they heard from guest speaker Joah Spearman, Founder and CEO of Localeur, as well as performances by percussion ensembles. First graders used the MLK quotation, “Faith is taking the first step even when you can't see the whole staircase,” as inspiration to design shoes that said a small step they could take to change the world. Their ideas included picking up trash, helping the homeless, treating others with respect, and spreading love.

On MLK Day, St. Andrew’s faculty participated in the annual march at the State Capitol, while students volunteered to clean up Montopolis Park in coordination with Amala Foundation and American YouthWorks. The following Saturday, mezzo soprano Icy Monroe, rising opera star and student of UT opera legend and civil rights pioneer Barbara Smith Conrad, dazzled the audience at the Dell Fine Arts Center with some of her favorite spirituals, including “At the River,” “Precious Lord,” and “Ride On, King Jesus.”
