LS Spanish Pen Pals Go High-Tech

Getting a written letter in the mail is a rare treat nowadays, but this year Spanish teacher Emily Meador’s students in grades 3-6 are going beyond the traditional pen pal experience. Emily’s cousin is teaching in Lugo, Spain, and they’ve decided to partner together to exchange both video messages and written letters.

SAS students are having fun making connections through the videos, as Emily describes, “They love watching the Spanish students perform a dance, do gymnastics, talk about playing soccer, and show off the different areas of their school. They love seeing similarities between our two schools: The Spanish school has a small gym and a big gym like we do. Also, the Spanish students danced to a song called ‘Gozadera’, which just so happens to be a song that our students learned this year!”

What’s just as exciting is beyond the classroom walls, where students have glimpsed the Spanish countryside.
The students have been able to get a tour of this small school in rural Spain. They were in awe at the shot of all the green mountains and rural landscape surrounding the school.”

Emily coordinated a similar project for her 4th graders last year. She says, “I had a friend teaching in rural Costa Rica, so it was a fun partnership!”
