Josh Blumenthal Named Head Varsity Boys Lacrosse Coach

St. Andrew’s School is delighted to announce the hiring of Josh Blumenthal to be the Head Varsity Boys Lacrosse Coach. Blumenthal was initially hired at St. Andrew’s to serve as the Assistant Athletic Director. Former Head Coach Jamie DeBole will remain on the staff as Associate Head Coach. Additionally, James Burleson-Porras and Carter Cowan will return to serve as Assistant Coaches for their third year each.
"I am beyond excited to work alongside coaches DeBole, Cowan, and Burleson-Porras, as we continue to build upon the incredibly strong foundation that is St. Andrew’s School lacrosse,” Blumenthal said. "I appreciate the support entrusted in me by Jeff McCrary and the SAS administration, and I am looking forward to building a truly cohesive lacrosse program from top to bottom."

Blumenthal has 16 years of lacrosse coaching experience, with 8 years each at both the high school and collegiate levels. Most recently, he served dual roles at Babson College and Holliston High School as an Assistant Coach, and prior to that, he had spent four years at Regis College as their Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach. While at Regis, Blumenthal was named the 2013 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Coach of the Year, and he guided the Pride program to highs for number of wins, including a record nine victories in 2014, and their first-ever Eastern Athletic Collegiate Conference (ECAC) playoff appearance.

The Amityville, N.Y. native has coached numerous athletic and academic all-conference selections along with an NECC Conference Player of the Year, Pilgrim League Second Team All-Conference, NEILA All-Star and Academic All-Region participant.

Prior to those stops, Blumenthal was an assistant coach at Northeast-10 Conference powerhouse Adelphi University, where he worked primarily with the goalies and in operations. Before that, he spent four years as the Head Varsity Boys Lacrosse Coach and Sports Information Director at Palmer Trinity School in Miami. He led his team to a top-10 finish in South Florida in three of his four seasons and produced numerous All-State players, a County MVP, Academic All-American and four Senior Athletes of the Year. In 2006 he was named Miami-Dade County Coach of the Year. He also served as Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator for the U-19 Bermuda National Team in the summer of 2008. He also spent two years as goalie coach for the Babson College Women’s Lacrosse Team helping guide them to an NCAA Sweet 16 showing in 2010.

"In speaking with Jamie, it became clear that his success with GlobeKick was going to make it difficult to serve as Head Coach of the boy’s lacrosse program," Athletic Director McCrary explained. "I am ecstatic that he is still able and willing to stay on as Associate Head Coach this coming season. He is an amazing and humble person, and we are blessed that he will remain as a part of the St. Andrew’s family," he added.

“While I'm excited about my new venture, GlobeKick, its early successes will unfortunately make it difficult to remain the head coach at St. Andrew's Episcopal School for the 2017 lacrosse season,” DeBole said. “I do not anticipate being able to make my fullest commitment to the program, which would not be fair to this amazing group of players, the coaches, or the school. I am excited to stay with the program as associate head coach for the 2017 season and am excited to learn from Coach Blumenthal, who has numerous years of coaching experience at the collegiate level. I am also excited that Coach Burleson-Porras and Coach Cowan will be returning as assistant coaches this season. Together, the four of us make what I firmly believe is the best coaching staff in the history of St. Andrew's lacrosse program history. I am looking forward to a great season ahead.”

Blumenthal played lacrosse at the University of Rhode Island and was a member of the 2001 Pioneer League Championship team. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Communication from URI in 2003 and also attained a Masters of Arts in Sport Management from Adelphi in August of 2009.

He resides in Austin with his wife Cherilynn and son Ethan.
