Margot Newcomer Named New Head Swim Coach

St. Andrew’s School is excited to announce the hiring of Margot Newcomer to be the Head Swim Coach. Additionally, Bo Hickey will serve as the Assistant Swim Coach.
They take over the program from Janet Risser, who will continue coaching club swimming and watching her daughters compete in college.

Coach Newcomer has worked for the Austin Swim Club since January of 2015, focusing on swimmers from ages 10-14. Prior to that, she served as a Graduate Assistant for the University of Texas Men’s Swim Team for two years. Before moving to Austin, Coach Newcomer was the Head Age Group Coach for the Kansas City Swim Academy, instructing swimmers from ages 6 to 22. These swimmers ranged from beginners to Olympic Trial Qualifiers. In college, Coach Newcomer swam for the University of Pennsylvania. She was a 3-time Ivy League Championship finalist in the 500 freestyle, and she was the anchor of the school record-breaking 800 freestyle relay. Additionally, Coach Newcomer was named team MVP in her junior year, received the Team Award in her senior year, and was named to the All-Ivy Academic team in her senior year as well.

Coach Hickey joins the St. Andrew’s staff as Assistant Coach. He began working with the Austin Aquatics and Sports Academy in August of 2016 as a Strength and Conditioning Coach. He assists in dryland training for swimmers of all ages and ability. He also leads masters swimming practices for swimmers and triathletes. Prior to his work at the AASA, Coach Hickey has held a variety of different positions. Most notably, he trained members of the United States Department of Defense on water safety courses and managed their pools. He also worked with George Washington University as a Volunteer Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for two years, working with seven different Division I teams.

On her hiring, Coach Newcomer says, "I am honored to have this opportunity to work with the St. Andrew’s swim team, Bo Hickey, and Jeff McCrary. I look forward to a great season.
