SAS Faculty Earn Fellowship Opportunities

We are excited to announce that two members of the St. Andrew's faculty recently received acceptance into competitive and well renowned fellowships in their given field.
Heather Tone: 2024 Jack Hazards Fellow

Upper School English Teacher, Heather Tone, was one of ten high school teachers to receive a 2024 Jack Hazards Fellowship, chosen from an impressive pool of distinguished candidates from around the country. Sponsored by the New Literary Project, each fellow will receive a $5,000 cash award to support their summer dedicated to their own creative writing, along with a variety of promotional and pedagogical opportunities. Jack Hazard Fellows are writers of fiction, creative nonfiction, or memoir, and the fellowship is awarded in support of an ongoing project in one of these genres. 

In a letter from the New Literary Project announcing Ms. Tone's acceptance, this is what they had to say about the fellowship: Jack Hazard Fellowships intend to enhance the creative lives of writers teaching high school anywhere in the United States. This innovative and unique opportunity is open to an undervalued, dedicated, and deserving community of writers... These writers who teach inspire students, high schools,
and communities, and provide a professional model of writers working to find
meaning and to create art in chaotic times.

Emma DeVine: 2024 CDC Science Ambassador Fellow

Middle School Science Teacher, Emma DeVine, was recently named a 2024 CDC Science Ambassador Fellow. The competitive fellowship is the only program of its kind offered by CDC for STEM teachers and educational leaders interested in bringing public health sciences into middle and high school classrooms. This summer, Ms. DeVine will travel to CDC headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia for a 5-day course, and will then be part of a 1-year distance-based program developing middle and high school public health curriculum materials and lessons in partnership with the CDC. During the one year program she will work in a cohort of about 25 - 30 fellow K-12 and university STEM educators and professionals collaborating on this important work. 

We congratulate Ms. Tone and Ms. DeVine on these incredible opportunities and feel so fortunate to have such talented and hard working people at St. Andrew's.
