Physical Education

St. Andrew’s is committed to daily physical activity in grades K-5. Physical Education classes focus on helping students build fundamental skills, develop healthy habits and promote sportsmanship through games and activities.

In kindergarten, students attend 30-minute classes. Our focus is to teach the students the value of physical activity and develop key social skills including good sportsmanship and teamwork. We introduce them to a variety of skills to improve balance, hand and eye coordination, flexibility and strength. Jump roping, throwing, catching, kicking, and movement education are just a few they are introduced to and practice throughout the year.
In grades 1-4, students attend 30-minute classes and rotate through units to develop skills such as throwing and catching, jump roping, striking, movement education, juggling, climbing, rhythmical movement and kicking/punting.
In grade 5, students attend 30 minute-classes and the primary focus for this age group is introducing them to activities. Some include volleyball, flag football, archery, kickball, spikeball, floor hockey, basketball, badminton, pickball, table tennis, soccer and track.

  • Playful Parents, Students at PE Open House

Our Lower School students had a blast showing off their fitness skills during the annual PE Open House (see photos here) last Friday, September 21. It was also a chance for parents to learn more about the PE curriculum, including the student fitness testing performed three times a year. PE teachers are using Seesaw software to upload fitness scores so parents can see their child’s progress with videos, pictures, and data. PE teacher Tom Costas said, “Our ultimate goal is for students to reach the Bronze medal (healthy range) in all areas of fitness.  We also emphasize that no matter what their fitness level is that they work hard to see improvement.”

If you missed the PE Open House, there are more PE events that parents are invited to attend this year!

The Lower School’s PE team gave Lower Schoolers a special Fall Fest preview this month, with the help of parent volunteers and Upper School students Jett Hampton ‘19, Hasie Sherman ‘19, and Kyla Thompson ‘20. Lower School students spent a morning rotating among supervised activities like quarterback toss, putt-putt, chicken flingers, zap the zombie, and lasso the longhorn to get them ready for the official Fall Fest event on October 22. Though the preview event was a special treat for the kids, Upper Schoolers Jett, Hasie, and Kyla had just as much fun playing with them and reminiscing! Click here to see a video clip on Instagram. The Fall Fest on Oct. 22 was a success (Click here to see photos of Fall Fest on Facebook) thanks to our Fall Fest Co-Chairs Laura Wallace and Laurel Simmons, parent volunteers, and to Frost Bank for donating the water.
