As part of the Middle School science curriculum, seventh grade students travel to the Catalina Island Marine Institute on Catalina Island, CA to study marine life and marine ecosystems. During this three-day trip students conduct labs, listen to lectures, snorkle, and sea-kayak, among other activities.
Gibson Marable ‘21 shared his experience with us: “This year our grade had the pleasure of embarking on a voyage to California’s Catalina Island. Catalina was tons of fun. I had never actually gotten on a boat being used for transportation before, nor had I been on an island before. It was great!"
"I think the best part of Catalina were the activities like snorkeling and kayaking because you get to be involved in the great outdoors. Average teenagers spend about 7 ½ hours consuming media on any given day, so it was nice to be involved in activities like this. I for one, have never gone snorkeling before, and right when I jumped in the first thing I saw was a stingray. He was just chilling in the sand at the bottom and he looked so peaceful."
"We swam gracefully all over the island coast and saw sea urchin, and much more. At first, I was a little sceptical about kayaking, because I had been out in a kayak with rough waters before, and I hated it. But after having a splash war with another group, I adjusted to it. Kayaking was great because I was the master at paddle splashing. I also could see sea lions warming their flippers from the kayak. We saw a lot of wildlife and cool things I had never seen before. I absolutely loved when we tested the sixth grade boats because I could touch sharks and stingrays. It was so much fun and I really would enjoy it if I could go again sometime.”
