Latin Students Shine at TSJCL Convention

This April, over 35 St. Andrew's Latin students attended the annual Texas State Junior Classical League (TSJCL) Convention at Sandra Day O'Connor High School in San Antonio.
While in San Antonio, students also visited the Alamo and took in a bit of Texas history!

This year, more than 1,000 students competed across academic, artistic, and athletic competitions centered on Ancient Mediterranean history, culture, and the Latin and Greek languages. The convention also featured an agora (marketplace), a service project, and a talent show.

One of the most anticipated events is Certamen, a buzzer-style competition similar to Quiz Bowl that tests Latin language skills and knowledge of Latin grammar, Roman history and culture, Greco-Roman mythology, and Latin literature. Teams must out-buzz opponents and work together on bonus questions. At the state level, each region of Texas sends only one team to compete. St. Andrew's had a strong showing across all three divisions: Mia C. '29 played on the All-Area Novice team, which took second place; Nola L. '29 and Ash S. '29 represented St. Andrew's on the All-Area Intermediate team, which placed third; and Quinn E. '26, Presley K. '26, and Nina U. '27 competed in the Advanced division on the team that won the Texas State Championship.
Quinn E. '26 also earned the high point award for Latin Literature, scoring highest among all students in that contest. St. Andrew's Upper School placed 6th overall in the Purple Division (the largest division, determined by chapter size) across a wide range of academic and classical civilization contests.

We look forward to bringing many of these students to Indiana University Bloomington from July 21–26 for the National Junior Classical League Convention. If you're interested in joining the trip, please reach out to one of our Latin teachers.
