On March 27 and 28, St. Andrew’s Upper School students competed in academic, artistic, and athletic contests at the Texas State Junior Classical League (TSJCL) convention at Amarillo High School.
The Austin-area Advanced Certamen Team (which included students from St. Andrew’s) competed in the state tournament. The advanced division team, composed of St. Andrew’s students captain Bryce Deskins, team manager William McKinnerney, Rachel Nezzer, Katherine Salinas, Walton Schmidt, and Jonathan Zornio, won second place and missed tying for first place by 5 points. Several of those students will combine with the San Antonio team to represent Texas at the National convention this summer at Trinity University. Congratulations to these Certamen players!
Overall, the Upper School placed ninth in Advanced Division Sweepstakes. Additionally, the Upper School Club was awarded the second runner-up prize in the Latin Club of the Year contest.
Every year at the TSJCL convention, the member schools elect a board of student officers to lead the organization for the following year. This year two St. Andrew’s students have served as officers: Katherine Salinas as Area F Chair and William McKinnerney as Webmaster. At the convention this year, Walton Schmidt was officially sworn in as the new 2015-2016 TSJCL Historian after a successful campaign at the convention. Bryce Deskins won an award for having the highest score for his individual contest (Classical Art) in any level.
Good luck to our Latin scholars as they prepare for Nationals this summer at Trinity University in San Antonio!
