Middle School's "Peter Pan" Delivers Magical Moments

A classic tale was told with stunning special effects that left audiences dazzled at the Dell Fine Arts Center on May 8 and 9. The Middle School’s “Peter Pan” production was a true feat in storytelling and acrobatics.

Professional flying harnesses served as the magical fairy dust that helped the Darling children and Peter Pan glide, jump, and spin in flight across the stage. A curtain of stars, a painted forest backdrop, and a partial pirate ship were just a few of the other fine touches that transported the audience to Never-Never Land.

Like most theatrical productions of this scale, “Peter Pan” brought the 63 cast members new challenges and opportunities to build their confidence. Emma Williams '19, who played Peter, had 33 hours of extra flying practice the week before the show. Emma remarks, “I learned that being the lead role is a lot of work, and that most of the cast takes attitude cues from the lead. That helped me not stress out because I knew that if I fell apart, the cast would with me.” Kevin Keelan '19, who played Captain Hook, faced a different challenge. As an athlete, Kevin was unaccustomed to Captain Hook’s “very proper character,” but Kevin remarks, “I learned how to trust myself more in order to accomplish harder challenges.”

The finishing touch was the cast’s enthusiasm to perform together on stage. As Kevin Keelan says, “My favorite part was not any one scene from the performance, but the time I spent with friends doing something I love. I hope that next year’s musical is as fun and amazing as this year’s.”

Congratulations to "Peter Pan" director Jason Kruger, musical director Annie Blancken, and guest choreographer from UT's Musical Theatre department Natasha Davison for delivering a production we won't soon forget!
