SEL on a Hawaiian Canoe

Annie Billups, 2nd Grade Teacher
Last week the 2nd grade Billups Belugas interviewed Ka'ai McAfee-Torco of Hokule'a. The Hokule'a is a traditional double-hulled canoe from Hawaii. Sponsored by the Polynesian Voyaging Society, Hokule'a has been on a 2-year voyage around the world to spread "malama honua," or environmental stewardship. It is unique in that it does not have a motor and uses only stars and wayfinding to navigate.
Currently in New York, Kumu  Ka'ai ("Kumu" means “teacher” in Hawaiian) led us in discussion about what it means to be part of a crew and how CARES behaviors (Cooperation, Assertiveness, Responsibility, Empathy, Self-Control) on a vessel are no different from our CARES behaviors in the classroom.

She also gave us a virtual tour of the canoe and showed us how it was built. We will build our own model "wa'a," or canoes in STEAM Lab. The other 2nd grade classes will have an opportunity to interview Ka'ai and build wa'a, too.
