Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

In Lower School, a St. Andrew's student is someone who CARES.
The Lower School's Social Emotional Learning (SEL) supports the development of self, relationships, and community by using an adaptation of the Responsive Classroom’s CARES program.  St. Andrew’s faculty and students emphasize, practice, and assess growth in each of these 5 core value areas:

Cooperation
Assertion
Responsibility
Empathy
Self-Control

Daily and weekly emphasis is placed on each core value, and sub-skills within each area are introduced and practiced to reinforce the understanding of these values.

St. Andrew’s teachers are trained in Responsive Classroom strategies, techniques, and daily routines.  The faculty also use a shared resource library, developed and grown by each grade level team and department.  Common books, activities, songs, and videos are available to all faculty and CARES posters, flip charts, and definitions are displayed in each classroom and common area throughout the school.

The Lower School has created an SEL Team to oversee the CARES program throughout the school year.  Each grade level and department nominates one representative to meet weekly throughout the school year with the goal of discussing and planning greater implementation of the program.  This SEL Team member takes an active voice at all grade level and faculty meetings.

  • Join Us for "Parenting in Digital Age"

Join us on Monday, December 3, at 6:30 pm in the Middle School for a conversation and book study about parenting kids in the digital age. The discussion will center around the new book written by Dr. Mike Brooks and Dr. Jon Lasser, called "Tech Generation: Raising Balanced Kids in a Hyper-Connected World." We encourage you to read the book, but it's not required to attend. We'd love to have as many contributors to this important discussion as possible. If you think you can make it, please RSVP using this form.

St. Andrew's Annie Sykes (Middle School Student Services Coordinator) and Scott Zimmerman (Director of Social Emotional Learning) will host the discussion. Parents will be given the opportunity to ask questions, talk in small groups, and encourage one another with stories of success.

Unable to attend on December 3? Mark your calendar for TuesdayFebruary 5, 2019, when Dr. Brooks will be presenting to all St. Andrew's families at 8:00 am in Rollins Library. Our hope is that by providing these two information sessions, we will support and empower you as parents in raising healthy children in a digital world.
