Track & Field Athletes Break More Records at AIPL Championship
Fifth through eighth grade track and field athletes broke a total of six Middle School records this year, capping off their strong season with a AIPL Championship win.
"Way to end the season on a high note! The coaches want to commend all of our student-athletes on their hard work and improvement, and thank the parents for their support," said Middle School Athletics Director, Jack Wallace.
The seventh and eighth grade track and field squads won the AIPL Championship this April, marking the fifth year in a row the seventh and eighth grade boys won the title, according to Wallace. Additionally, both fifth and sixth grade teams earned runner up honors.
AIPL is the latest win in a string of successes by the Middle School track team.
"A total of six Middle School records were broken this season, certainly more in one season than I can remember in recent history," said Wallace.
Earlier in the track and field season, Ellie H. '30 broke the 800m record and Kannon W. '30 broke the 100m hurdles record.
"It's fun to think that both of these student-athletes still have their eighth grade year," added Wallace.
Four records broken at AIPL Championship in April
Three cheers for our record-breaking student athletes:
Ellie H. improved upon her 800m record, but also broke the 1600m record by over 11 seconds! For context, her time of 5:40.45 would have placed her in 6th place in the Southwest Preparatory Conference Championship Meet (3A) that our Upper School team competed in this past weekend.
Kannon W. broke the 200m record with a time of 24.22, in addition to his hurdles record. This record was previously held by the infamous KJ Adams, who just completed his senior season as a starter on the Kansas Jayhawks Men's Basketball team.
Ainsley S. '29, Kendall K. '29, Sophia T. '30, and Katy F. '30 bested the previous SAS record from 2012 for the seventh and eighth grade girls 4x100m relay team.
"That was a talented group and at the time, was the league record for a handful of years, so an impressive feat to say the least," said Wallace.
Aaron B. '29, Andrew L. '29, Nelson R. '29, and Chance F. '2 performed strong in the seventh and eighth grade boys 4x200m relay. They broke the school record by five seconds and narrowly missed out on the league record!
