Congratulations to the cast and crew of this year’s Sweeney Todd production, who have received 10—out of a possible 13—award nominations from the Greater Austin High School Musical Theatre Award (GAHSMTA) judging panel!
St. Andrew’s performers, crew, designers, and directors delivered three sold-out performances of this Stephen Sondheim thriller last fall, and now they are receiving official recognition for their incredible work. The 10 nominated categories are:
Best Actress in a Lead Role: Mandy Justiz (Mrs. Lovett)
Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Gabe Lucio-Martin (Judge Turpin)
Best Choreography: Natasha Davison, Ellie McDaniel
Best Musical Direction: Michael Rosensteel
Best Technical Execution: Alex Gurasich, Lily Kincannon, Rachel Nezzer, Henry Barnstone, Graham Patterson, Merrick Anderson, Kelsey Qualters, Ryan Janek, Trey Sheperd, Jack Guttell, Oliver Chapin-Eiserloch, Annie Hentschell, Nicholas Youngberg, Colton Gunnarson, Anthony Benevento, Issiah Arroyo, Walton Schmidt, Jimena Landa, Madison Leyens, Chris Casey, Fletcher Barnhill, Matthew Otto, Max Bartee, Ben Brimble, and Tech Theatre Classes
Best Production: Rick Garcia
Musical Director Michael Rosensteel, Technical Director Scott Schumann, and Director Rick Garcia began preparing for the production last April, and Rick recalls, “From the initial discussions, we knew it was a very special vision we were creating. We compromised little, if any, of the vision and had a lot of help from families and loyal volunteers to bring it all to fruition.” Reflecting on the recent nomination announcement, Rick says, “I am proud of the entire company of student actors and crew and design team, and we are grateful to be recognized by the GAHSMTA.”
This year 27 participating area high schools vied for a coveted GAHSMTA nomination. The winners will be announced in a Tony Awards-style ceremony on April 14 at the Long Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets for the ceremony will go on sale April 1.
