Katy Roybal Named Head of Lower School

After a national search, St. Andrew’s is pleased to announce that Katy Roybal will serve as the School’s next Lower School Head beginning July 1, 2021.  Ms. Roybal will replace Kama Bruce, who is transitioning to the Assistant Head of School role after seven years of faithful service leading the Lower School.

For the past 22 years, Ms. Roybal has served at Trinity School in Menlo Park, California.  Trinity is an Episcopal school with 150 students in grades preschool through 5.  She began her tenure there as a Spanish teacher and then a junior kindergarten teacher, and followed that role as the Director of Educational Technology, then Director of Marketing and Events. She has served most recently as the Interim Lower School Director, responsible for Trinity’s Early Childhood Program.  In this role she was tasked with designing the school’s distance learning program as a result of the COVID-19 shutdown and successfully navigated the re-opening of their campus in the fall of 2020. At Trinity she also founded a Maker Space and introduced Design Thinking curriculum to the school, which have both now grown into a year-long curriculum thread.

“Katy’s experience in a diversity of roles in a Lower School is a very exciting opportunity for St. Andrew’s,” said Head of School Sean Murphy. “She brings great academic experience, innovation, creativity, positive energy and a true belief in the value of an Episcopal education.  We are very pleased to welcome her to our school family.”

Katy graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Arts in History and Spanish, earned her California Teaching Credential from Santa Clara University and received her M.Ed. In private school administration from the University of Hawaii.  She and her family will move to Austin this summer.

I want to express my excitement and gratitude for this opportunity,” said Katy. “From the moment I stepped on campus, a feeling of joy and connection was present. My family and I are delighted to join the St Andrew's community. I cannot wait to meet the full student body and parent community.”

St. Andrew’s looks forward to Katy leading the Lower School, which includes 58 faculty and staff and 330 students in grades K-5.
