Cross Country and Track Coach, Gilbert Tuhabonye, featured in President George W. Bush's new book.
President George W. Bush recently released a book of painted portraits featuring 43 American immigrants. The book, Out of Many, One includes stories and oil paintings, by President Bush, highlighting American immigrants and the inspirational journeys that brought them to America and how they have contributed to this country.
One of the immigrants featured in the book is St. Andrew's Track and Cross Country coach, Gilbert Tuhabonye. Gilbert came to America after running for his life after an attack on his school during a civil war in his native country of Burundi. Coach Gilbert attended college and ran for Abilene Christian University, and upon graduation came to Austin. Shortly after his arrival, he started a running club, Running with Joy. Jenna Bush Hager, daughter of President Bush, was a senior at UT at the time and joined Gilbert's club. She was always inspired by Gilbert's story, and when she heard about her father's book, she shared the story with him.
On the day of the book's release, President Bush and his wife, Laura, appeared on the Today Show to talk about it. During that segment, Jenna once again shared Gilbert's story.
