Coach Tuhabonye Honored by Nobelity Project

The Nobelity Project honored St. Andrew’s head cross-country and track coach Gilbert Tuhabonye at their "Feed the Peace Awards" event on February 12. When Gilbert stood up to accept his award, he says, “I had tears in my eyes because it was very emotional. I was humbled and honored to receive the award.” Watch the Nobelity Project’s video of Gilbert here.
The awards honor “those committed to social change and education.” Gilbert was selected for his contributions as a community leader, “coach, hero and founder of The Gazelle Foundation,” his non-profit that raises funds for clean drinking water infrastructure in Burundi.

Gilbert and fellow honoree, musician Jerry Jeff Walker, join a distinguished list of previous honorees that includes Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Ben Harper, Kyle Chandler, and Steven Van Zandt.

Reflecting on Gilbert’s impact at St. Andrew's, SAS Athletics Director Jeff McCrary says, “Gilbert is an amazing part of the St. Andrew's community. He is incredibly inspiring, and like many of our coaches, he is able to get our student-athletes to accomplish things that they never thought they were capable of doing. On top of that, he is an even better person, as evidenced by his well-deserved award. We are certainly proud to have a person of the caliber of Gilbert on our coaching staff.”

SAS alum and assistant cross country coach, Roberto Diaz '11 recently remarked, "Gilbert is such an inspiration not only in running but in other aspects of life...He has a way of bringing people together and creating an amazing positive community, it truly is a joy to be able to run under him. Now it’s a privilege to coach next to him. He is an amazing role model and I still look up to him to this day."

Congratulations on this well-deserved award Gilbert! Go Cru!
